Doing the design and/or illustration for book covers would be a cool job. Since there is little chance I will ever be hired to do either, I decided to create an imaginary cover for the next book I read (an act that gives concrete proof of why I will not be hired to do the design and/or illustration for book covers). This unfinished attempt is for The Smoke Ring the sequel to The Integral Trees by Larry Niven. The unpolished illustration is based on a very brief passage in the book that evokes a striking image (that I failed to capture): 'One day he might regret even the little power he used to maintain the garden and the cats.'
UPDATE: I'd heard Larry Niven was a conservative, but I didn't know he was a vicious Rush Limbaugh - Ann Coulter conservative. Saying the Department of Homeland Security should spread rumors in the Latino community that emergency rooms are killing patients in order to harvest their organs, in an attempt to scare illegal aliens away from hospitals is pretty despicable even for a conservative. Now I don't feel so bad that the imaginary cover above sucks, or that I bought The Integral Trees and The Smoke Ring for 50 cents at a library book sale.
